Ponza is the largest of the Pontine islands, situated out in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west of Naples. Sometimes described as a more authentic alternative to Capri, the island is notable for its natural beauty and Neapolitan-influenced cuisine, and has a reputation as a hideaway for the rich and famous.

Rugged, rocky and almost entirely uninhabited, Palmarola is a secret even to many Italians, yet Jacques Cousteau described this as ‘the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean Sea’. Landings are possible at a handful of craggy coves, and the crystal clear water is perfect for snorkelling.

The lovely town of Sorrento, draped across rugged cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples, has been charming visitors since the days of the Grand Tour. The Renaissance palaces and many craft shops make Sorrento an attractive destination in its own right, and it’s also a jumping off point for Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.

Taormina enjoys a truly spectacular setting on Sicily’s east coast, perched on a mountainside looking out towards the smouldering Mount Etna. The medieval streets are pleasant but often crowded in high season, so we’d recommend getting out and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Corfu, known as Kerkyra in Greek, is a beautiful island of verdant hills and rocky coves, and away from the more crowded resorts it remains a sleepy and idyllic place. Don’t miss the picturesque Venetian architecture of Corfu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kotor sits at the head of a beautiful, fjord-like bay, hemmed in by glowering mountains. The compact, walled old town is Montenegro’s star attraction, a warren of little alleyways and shady squares that is often described as a ‘mini Dubrovnik’.

We never fail to be moved when we see the terracotta roofs and honey-golden walls of Dubrovnik, and a stroll around the perfectly preserved old town is a highlight of any visit to the Dalmatian coast. Make sure you take the time to walk around the walls and soak up the marvellous sea views.

Of all Croatia’s myriad inhabited islands, Vis is the furthest from the mainland, and was off-limits to tourists for many years, reserved for the Yugoslav military. The resulting lack of development is a big part of the island’s appeal, along with stunning scenery, excellent food and wine, and the attractive little towns of Komiza and Vis Town.

The island of Krk, connected to the Croatian mainland by a bridge, lies at the northern end of the Dalmatian coast, and is a busy holiday destination during summer. The historic centre of Krk Town is a highlight, with its cobbled streets, Romanesque cathedral and the 12th-century Frankopan Castle.

Lošinj is one of Croatia’s lesser known gems, a verdant island that was once the favourite holiday resort of the Austro-Hungarian emperor, Franz Josef. The fishing villages of Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj are pleasingly picturesque, and the surrounding waters are known for their healthy dolphin population.
