Our insight
A Svalbard cruise will take you way beyond the north coast of Norway, across the Barents Sea bound for the Arctic Ocean and Svalbard, an archipelago of which the largest island is Spitsbergen.
A whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries, these islands were then largely uninhabited until the beginning of the 20th century, when several permanent mining communities were established. No roads connect the settlements, but snowmobiles, aircraft and boats serve as local transport.
This is truly the land of the midnight sun, and it's a breeding ground for many seabirds. In addition you are likely to see reindeer, marine mammals and, if you are lucky, polar bears, with many areas now protected nature reserves.
For any Arctic cruise, layers and thermals are essential, as well as good quality sunglasses and high factor sunblock. This destination is all about the scenery and is very appealing to photographers - remember to come well equipped, as you are unlikely to be able to get everything you need locally.
Speak to us about any or all the equipment that you may need: we're experienced Arctic travellers (indeed Edwina has even jumped into the Arctic Ocean in Svalbard, for reasons known only to herself!).
Our tips
There’s really not much choice! Go for the Radisson Blu.
Travel out of Longyearbyen by snow scooter or dog sled to take a look at the amazing scenery and hunt for wildlife.
Take a tour by RIB to see the beautiful islands and beaches of this remote region, lapped by Gulf Stream waters.
