Our insight
There are some cities in the world where arriving by sea can be a truly iconic experience, and we can think of no better way to arrive in New York than being at sea and watching the skyscrapers slowly appear out of the mist. This is one wonderful experience which is almost always included on a Canada and New England cruise itinerary.
As well as the larger cities, cruises to Canada and New England visit charming rustic fishing towns - places such as Bar Harbor, Halifax and Sydney - where you can get your fill of lobster bakes. There is also the opportunity to whale watch as you sail the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
These port intensive voyages enable you to visit a host of cities from the comfort of your chosen ship and are so much more restful than a fly-drive holiday. Of course the main appeal is the autumn colours, which is what tends to dictate the time of year that these voyages operate.
Our tips
Canadians call their one-dollar coins “loonies” (because it bears the image of a loon) and their two-dollar coins “toonies” so sort out your vocabulary and talk like a local!
If you’ve time, set aside a couple of days to travel to Knight Inlet Lodge for bear viewing.
You don’t need to take a private tour in Montréal, the city is completely manageable and although signs are in French, everyone speaks English.
Chateau Frontenac is tempting, but we choose the Auberge St Antoine.
What our clients say
“I had always booked direct before but they certainly provided an extra level of service that you do not get if you do that.”
